Comet River Contribution

I have a lovely photo of Sophie James on her pony Mintie, attending her first gymkhana at the Capella Show.  She is one of our youngest members at Comet River.
Camp Committee
The first meeting of the Camp Committee will be held next week. If you have any ideas please email to me. We are open to innovative suggestions so please put your thinking caps on.  The camp dates are 24 September to 29th . The camp has been booked to be held at Peak Downs Show Grounds including the use of the Indoor Arena.
We need discussion to see if there will be a clash of dates for riders wanting to compete bat the Mounted Games on Friday 29th at paradise Lagoons.
Camp could be in Sunday pm and have four days instead of finishing on the Friday lunchtime.
This matter will be decided at the Camp Committee meeting and presented at the Zone 15 meeting on SUNDAY 23 July at Blackwater. You need to be at this Zone meeting for input into camp discussion and decisions.

Sincere apologies for the delay in sending this newsletter out but I have had a virus problem and I certainly don't want to send viruses to anyone.
I also have had to leave all the photos out as there were too many and it was impossible to send this to a group of people with numerous photos.
       Dressage Accreditation School

The Zone is trying to organize a Dressage Accreditation school in Zone 15. It is imperative that we hold this school as we are desperately short of judges. There is a proposal that when we get the qualified instructor to come to conduct the school, we hold a day in Capella and a day in Blackwater.
This would at least get some people qualified to Gymkhana level and then we could have a follow up to upgrade interested people to Zone level.
Please send your name in if you can possibly be involved, as we desperately need to have this accreditation school as soon as possible.
A date of 18-19 November at Capella has been booked for this accreditation weekend.

REPORT - The day was excellent, blessed with excellent weather and the grounds were green due to rain the previous week (no dust).  Being new to all this, it was a great learning day.  Numbers were down over both competitions due to lack of support and nearing end of school term, with people getting prepared to travel to state titles in Ingham.  However, the majority of unofficial riders were new to this competition and it's great to see them have a go.  A big thanks to Mrs Barb Forster who stepped in at the very last minute to be the Showjumping judge.  We need to cultivate more judges in these areas, as are few and far between in the Central Highlands region.  An incident free day as well.  For next year we will amend our unofficial program to keep up and coming riders interested,  Thanks also to all the parents, helpers, canteen workers, pencillers, course builders and judges who helped out in any way on the day, it was very much appreciated.  Your input helped the day run smoothly and efficiently.

Comet River Awards Life Memberships
At the recent Comet River Pony Club Gymkhana, long time members Kay and Alan Orr of Blackwater were awarded with life membership to Comet River Pony Club.
Their dedication over twenty years to the pony club has been appreciated immensely by members past and present who have had the fortune to work with and enjoy their company.
Kay has been chief instructor for many years at Comet. Having come up through pony club she is of great benefit to the children in her care.
Alan has been club president for some years now - he seems to be returned each year so he must be doing the right thing. Alan is always there to lend a helping hand, to make the sure the equipment is out ready for an event and to pick up and put away afterwards. "Orries" famous camp oven stew at our gymkhanas was always a highlight of the evening and much appreciated when the weather turns cold.
Zone 15 Pony Club patron Colleen McLaughlin and Comet River and Zone 15 life member Rosemary McLeod were on hand to present Kay and Alan with their Life Membership.
Congratulations to Kay and Alan for receiving this well deserved honour.

Dingo Instructors School
By Jenni Smith
The Pre Instructor / Refresher School held at Dingo Pony club grounds on Sunday 27 August was attended by 6 candidates and 10 instructors seeking refreshers. Claudette Rolfe the Regional Director ran the school assisted by regional Panel members Jenni Smith and Kay Orr. There were 9 Pony Club riders who were kind enough to become 'guinea pigs' for the day. It would have been impossible to have a successful school without these people. It was discussed and agreed on that more of these days need to be held to generate discussion and to reinforce skills for all instructors in our Zone. The next Pre Instructors School will be held at Peak Downs Pony Club Grounds on Saturday  14  October . For any further information please contact Linda Pitt or Heather Hardwick.
Our congratulations to Jenny Murphy on accepting her nomination to the Regional Panel to replace Narelle D'Arcy.

Camp Report
All is going well for camp. Our instructors are organised and we are just waiting for the very last minute nominations to come in. There are approximately 100 riders with a number of helpers, as well as the instructors, so we will have a camp of over 150 for the week.
There has been a good response to all areas of help in the camp. The committee is very grateful to all the adults who are coming to help and support the camp.
We have instructors coming from various places with Peta Jackson from Spring Creek a new face for camp.

Add your discussion points to this agenda.

Zone 15 Gymkhana
The Zone 15 Gymkhana was held on Saturday 9 September at the Mackenzie River grounds It must have been so disappointing to the organisers that there were only 21 riders. There were 22 riders from three clubs Mackenzie River, Middlemount and Dingo.

Horse Health Daily Routine
By Megan Wrey
Try to establish a daily routine for caring for your horse. Learn to observe the horse and become familiar with his/her normal behaviour patterns.
"        temperature (38o)
"        resting Pulse (36-42 bpm)
"        respiration (8-15 bpm)
"        learn recovery rate
"        check daily for health indicators
Care after Riding
By Megan Wrey
After riding your horse always cool down as this is as important as
check for signs of lameness e.g resting leg/short steps/horse 'nods' as he walks warm up, a good ten minutes of walk to allow muscles to cool and relax to allow lactic acid to be reabsorbed into the system is very important to keep your horse healthy.
Don't water your horse until he has cooled down lest colic could occur.
"        Don't wash him down until it is warm weather unless there is a real need.
Continual washing strips natural oils from the coat.
Remove excess water from the coat - rug up to keep warm.
Check your horse thoroughly for any soreness or injury before letting him go.
