                                                     MARCH 2011

GUY CREIGHTON "TRAIN THE TRAINER" CLINIC

The weekend of 12th & 13th Feb. saw an excellent representation of eighteen instructors from throughout Zone 15 converge on Emerald Pony Club grounds for what was to become a most valuable learning exercise for all.

Under the guidance of Guy, each person, no matter how experienced, was asked to step out of their comfort zone and take on the challenge of instructing a jumping class.

Nervous and quiet at the beginning of the weekend, developed into confident and directive by the end of the weekend.

Where not many participants started out  feeling like "trainers" at the beginning of the weekend, by the last evening they felt that by taking control, being themselves, being safe, looking, listening and not being afraid to change things, they all progressed to take on an instructional role and make a difference.

Recognising that they each had the ability to conduct a class, learn from their mistakes and then go on to help the rider achieve a good result by the end of the lesson, was a good confidence builder.

The weather was a little unkind to say the least, with the heat turned up to test us all, guinea pigs included. The guinea pigs coming from Emerald, Peak Downs, Blackwater, Dysart and Middlemount, all did a wonderful job as without them the weekend could not have happened. They suffered sitting around in the heat waiting for direction, but all did so with good humour.

Some comments from the participants:

"How pleased I was to be part of the large number of participants from all round our zone that shared so cooperatively. Go, Zone 15"- Fay Hawke, Emerald

" We found the weekend to be intense and full of new ideas. It helped build our confidence and structure our lessons. We are looking forward to applying it to our riders at home" - Amanda and Alana, Dysart.

"Highly recommended for anyone wanting to learn more about showjumping and what to look for when instructing, Guy catered for complete novice trainers to those with experience, equally. Looking forward to practising the training at Pony Club" - John and Marni Baker, Middlemount.

"Great weekend for all" - . Deb Bamblett, Blackwater.

ZONE 15 PONY CLUB AGM - CLERMONT
The Zone 15 Annual General Meeting will be held at the function area/garden at the
Commercial Hotel on Saturday, 5 March, 2011, starting at 10a.m.  This will be followed by the usual monthly meeting.  All interested people are welcome to attend, as observers,  as well as the 3 nominated delegates from each club.

Club Secretaries - If you have not yet sent details of your 2011 club executive and delegates to the Zone Secretary, could this please be done before Friday, 4 March.

Hoping to see all the regulars, as well as new faces, at the meeting.

REMINDER -  to anyone planning on attending any competitons at all - you must nominate through your own club secretary.  It is your secretary's job to contact the organising secretary, so do not let her tell you to do it yourself.

DYSART JUMPING SCHOOL

The Guy Creighton jumping clinic held in Dysart on the 26th & 27th Feb was attended by 20 riders from Zones 10 and 15.

All riders had four, one and a half hour lessons for the weekend. Starting with gymnastic exercises and progressing to walking the course, jumping rounds and polishing off their jump off courses.
All riders came to the clinic jumping well but improved greatly with Guy's attention to detail in their positions. He was also keen to see the flatwork improved on many of the "going" horses, explaining that they will then shape over the fences better and be much nicer to ride.

Guy's dry sense of humour and saying "and again" I am sure will stick in the minds of all riders for some time.
The campers were treated to hot meals and hospitality both nights provided by Dysart, with some stories exchanged and laughter heard.
From the comments of the riders and parents, Guy couldn't have had a more positive outcome.

The faces of the horses Sunday arvo told us they were glad to see Guy go home.
We just need the participants to remember Guys words of wisdom in there pursuits for success.

PEAK DOWNS PONY CLUB NEWS

At the beginning of February, we held our AGM and sign-on, followed by the first rally for the year.  There was a very impressive turn out with twenty-five riders taking part, including a couple of new families.  A very warm welcome is extended to William, Nick and Clare Sloan, Katie Davy, Penny Keane and Syrah Monk.

During the month, David Pitt and Ariana Corkill attended the Zone- organised "Train the Trainer" weekend in Emerald where past Olympic showjumper, Guy Creighton, ran a clinic on instructing showjumping to riders of all standards.  One of our riders, Cameron Corkill, gained some extra instruction as he was one of the 'guinea-pigs' on the weekend, for instructors to practise on.

The Donaldsons travelled to Rockhampton for showjumping competitions while the Borg and Conway families and Michelle Mason competed in Moranbah where Tracie Borg had the duel role of parent and judge.  Then the following weekend, the Conway, Borg and Hugo families made their way to Yeppoon for more showjumping and jumping equitation.

Abigail and Sarah Donaldson both took out first place in the Equitation at Alton Downs with Abigail coming 5th in the Showjumping and Sarah finishing 2nd in the 10 years and  under group in  showjumping.  Abigail also came 1st in the 60cm unofficial  jump on her young horse.

At Moranbah, Michelle Mason gained a 7th place in equitation and 5th in D grade.
Then at Yeppoon, in Jumping Equitation, Chloe Borg finished in 3rd place with Taylah Conway in 4th and for showjumping it was Chloe 2nd  and Taylah 3rd overall, with Casey Hancock finishing 4th in D Grade.

On 26/27 March, we will be hosting the Zone 15 Pony Club Jumping Equitation and Showjumping championships at Bridgeman Park in the Covered Arena, and are hoping for good nominations from many clubs in the zone.  There will be the Unofficial Height Class competitions as well as the Zone championships.

This year, we are celebrating our 50th anniversary, so in the coming months we will be preparing for a really good celebration on 1st October.  We will be contacting past members about this weekend, but if all past member families could mark this date on your calendars, and also tell anyone else you know (from near and far) who had connections with the club, about our plans, that would be great. Further updates will be in coming newsletters.

QUALIFYING CRITERIA FOR
STATE EVENTS 2001

For those who do not subscribe to the PCAQ Newsletter, there are 2 pages at the end of this newsletter with some changes to the qualifying criteria for competing at State Events.  It may save some  disappointments if you read  these and note the changes.
This can also be found on the PCAQ website.

All secretaries of clubs running qualifying events, please note (from the January PCAQ newsletter) -
  •        ALL required details must be included on the results sent to PCAQ, including Rider's name, Horse name, Club and "Q" if qualified.

  •        Results returned without any of these details, result in non-qualification for Rider
      and Horse.

NEWSLETTER ITEMS
As you will have noticed from this newsletter, and also the past two issues for this year, all the articles are not necessarily on Pony Club kids on their horses, or maybe don't have anything to do with horses, but are about what the Pony Club member and/or their family has been doing - at school, in the community, etc.  An individual Pony Club member can send in their own news, whereas the club secretary may like to send in news (and photos) of their rally or competition they have had.

Let us know your news or anything interesting that is happening around you - horsey or not.  Also, any requests for "Wanted" items or things "For Sale" and the like, can be put in the newsletter.  If someone has written a wonderful poem or story at school, send it in to us, so we can all enjoy it. If you have been on a trip, write and tell us about it.

FREE PCAQ ADMIN SCHOOL
In the past, these one-day administration schools, specifically for PCAQ club executives and any other interested members, have been excellent, especially for people recently elected to these positions.  Even if you do not have an executive position, there is quite a bit of general knowledge on the administrative side of your club that is interesting to know about.

The Blackwater Pony Club will be holding a free PCAQ Admin. School in Blackwater on 19 March starting at 9a.m. with the school being conducted by a staff member from Head Office.  It will be held at the Blackwater Community Building next to the Library, in Wey Street

Please let Blackwater secretary, Rebecca Sanderson, know if you plan on attending this school - email her at  shanjayponystud@dodo.net.au

                                                      APRIL  2011

ZONE 15 AGM HELD IN CLERMONT

On Saturday, 5 March, the Zone 15 Pony Club Annual General Meeting was held in Clermont.  The new committee for 2011 consists of Jenni Smith (President), Simone Firth (Vice President), Jeannette Fletcher (Secretary) and Ariana Corkill (Treasurer).

Many thanks to the Clermont club for arranging the venue and the great food!

The next zone meeting will be on 7 May at Blackwater (venue TBA). As this is a reasonably central position, it will be great to see as many as possible at the meeting.  Remember anyone can come to these meetings, but only 3 delegates from each club can vote.

CLEM SMITH JUMPING SCHOOL
Fifteen riders from Blackwater, Emerald and Peak Downs, attended the Clem Smith School which was held at Emerald last weekend 12th & 13th March.

The inclement weather had everyone on their toes as parents watched the clouds roll by. Fortunately, we only had a few light showers, which in turn kept the temperature down.

The smiles on the faces of the young riders said it all as they were encouraged and skilled by one of Australia's finest Show Jump riders, Clem Smith, who was a local lad from Dingo, before heading off to pursue his career in Showjumping.

Some of our beginner riders were a bit nervous to start with, but this soon turned to glee as they had their riding honed, taking on some jumps they had said they would never go over.

Learning to ride to line and reading strides was just a couple of things that Clem taught, and the improvement in the riders was there for all to see.

Some of our riders are competing at state and it was great to see them take this opportunity to fine touch their jumping skills before heading off.
- Jeannette Fletcher

ZONE JUMPING CHAMPIONSHIPS
'Is it going to rain?' was the question everyone was asking leading up to the Zone 15 Jumping Equitation & Show Jumping Competition on 26 & 27 March. As it turned out the weekend was one the driest we had seen for a while. Forty Five Competitors from Peak Downs, Emerald, Dysart, Balmoral, Yeppoon, Pioneer River Valley, Sarina, Moranbah, Comet, Duaringa, Wowan & Blackwater merged on Bridgeman Park Capella for the weekend.

As the host club, Peak Downs decided to run two equitation rings again this year so riders were able to compete in the both the main & covered arenas. Judges for Equitation this year were Jeannette Fletcher, Barb Forster, Cherie Pye, Jackie Donaldson, Tracie Borg and Bonita Orr.

Tracie Borg also judged the Showjumping with the first phase (AM5) commencing Saturday afternoon and continuing into the night. This left the Power & Speed, Grand
Prix and Unofficial classes for Sunday.

A big thank you needs to go to all our judges and course builders Tracie Borg, John Stenhouse and Ariana Corkill who were over seen during the weekend by Jenny Murphy.

BLACKWATER THEORY RALLY
Because it has been too wet to ride, Blackwater Pony Club has been having Theory rallies, to enable our pre-Instructors to keep up with the work required in their books.

Also the riders have a chance to do the theory required for their Certificates.

Kacey also showed the young riders how to do 'Around the World" and "Heel clicks", with a lot of laughter from the kids when she nearly fell off.

DINGO PONY CLUB NEWS
Our first rally for 2011 had to be cancelled as our grounds were too wet to ride on when we had 53 ml the night before the rally. The grounds have been mowed and the grass around the buildings
has been poisoned.

We finally held our Break Up for 2010 at "Boombah". The club were appreciative of the Fernie family's hospitality in inviting the club to hold the function at their home. Everyone had a most enjoyable evening. Emma Harvey was our Pony Clubber for 2010 and Claudia Gould won the most improved horse and rider.

Our AGM was held on 25 February. Tony Fernie was returned as Chairman and Jenni Smith as secretary. Alan Gould is our new Treasurer. Thanks were extended to the out going Treasurer, Anita Davison. The club is going to subsidize each rider $17 to cover the increase in insurance charges.

A Zone Refresher and Preschool is to be held on Saturday, 2 April, at the Pony Club Grounds. Our riders will be 'guinea pig' riders and any other clubs are invited to send members over to ride for the day.

PCAQ ADMINISTRATION  SCHOOL

Quantity did not deter the quality of the PCAQ Administration School, held at Blackwater on Saturday, 19 March, where only 7 people attended.

John Diegan, PCAQ Development Officer, was very informative covering all aspects of insurance as well as child protection, membership, PCAQ policies and enlightening us on the Risk Management Policy.

We were made aware of new regulations on Working with Children Checks;   that all Executive members of a club must have a Blue Card; and powers and duties of the Zone and Zone CIP.

It was disappointing to see most clubs did not have a representative present as the information given would have been beneficial to all club executives.

Please remember that John is available to answer any queries that clubs may have.  He can be contacted at the PCAQ office by phoning (07)3216 1255 or by email admin@pcaq.asn.au

ZONE DRESSAGE AND COMBINED TRAINING CHAMPIONSHIPS
April  8th and 9th saw  Emerald Pony Club presented with blissful weather as over 40 nominations produced fierce competition under the watchful eyes of judges from near and as far as Mackay.  Official and Unofficial riders from around the Zone and Rockhampton were put through the dressage ring and over jumps to bring home results that saw many riders improve their skills and qualify for future State events.

Even Mr Whippy presented the opportunity for a well earned treat for riders and parents at the end of the first day of competition.  With an early finish to the Championships on Sunday everyone was heading for home early with a smile.

Thank you to all those around the Zone who assisted in the running of this Zone event and to the riders for their participation.  All riders should be very proud of their efforts.

ZONE FLATWORK SCHOOL
On the weekend of 14/15 May, Emerald Pony Club will be hosting a Zone 15 Flatwork school at the Emerald Pony Club grounds.

The instructor will be Karen Abrahams, a coach from Rockhampton who competes very successfully herself.  She is well-known and highly regarded by many riders in this area.  Riders of all standards will benefit from lessons with Karen.

As with most zone clinics for riders, there will be some subsidy provided from the zone.  Further information will be on a separate flyer which all secretaries should have or contact Zone Secretary, Jeannette Fletcher at
jfletch5@bigpond.net.au

ZONE 15 MEETING - BLACKWATER
The next meeting of Zone 15 Pony Club will be held in Blackwater at the Queensland Mines Rescue Service Station, 43 Doon Street, on Saturday, 7 May, commencing at 10a.m.

Anyone interested in this is welcome to come along, as well as the delegates from each Zone 15 club.  We look forward to seeing some new faces at the meeting.

CAMPDRAFT SUCCESS
Middlemount Pony Club member Barbara Challacombe is better known as a dressage judge, competitor and instructor but since selling her dressage horses to Alexandria and Georgia Leppien she is training horses for Stockman's Challenge and Campdraft. On the 9th April Barbara won the Futurity Campdraft for horses under 5 years of age at the Springsure Campdraft on her 4 year old Quarter Horse mare.

Barbara is one of the organisers of the Capella Challenge and Campdraft to be held on the 5th , 6th, 7th August 2011.  This year for the first time there will be two Junior Rider Challenges, for riders under 13 years, and 13 and under 17years. The Challenge involves a dry work pattern (cowboy dressage) and a Campdraft run. Anyone wanting to learn more about riding in a Challenge is welcome to contact Barbara on 49 500 105 or 0428 500 106.

STATE JUMPING EQUITATION AND SHOWJUMPING - NAMBOUR
Upon  arrival on the Monday morning, I am sure we all wondered why we had just travelled so far to see more pouring rain and our precious horses, which we all had nursed through the 6 months previous of wet weather, stand in portable panels with water running through them.
No sympathy from the organisers, chatting some for taking too much saw dust, and while empty, covered stables, were seen for the next three days, and being told "everyone had the same conditions".
A large hill to climb every time we went to our camp, which at least was on bitumen, not in mud, kept us fit. All the things we say are character building…….!
The arenas all being sand, held up very well, with only a few boggy patches showing up now and again.  With this in mind the course builders moved jumps and planted trees to keep the riders safe. The same could not be said for the practice arenas which were danger zones for the trainers, being splashed with mud a common occurrence. The week saw very few falls, not many could be attributed to the grounds, so well done organisers and riders.

Equitation started well on the Tuesday, if you were lucky enough to miss the downpours. With Zone 15 riders doing well bringing home a gold, two silver, a bronze and a fourth overall.
Our sympathy to Renae who's horse pulled up lame before her first event, a long way to drive to only turn around and go home again, but don't sack the farrier just yet.
10 & under -
Taylah Conway -  6th round 1 ,  13th round 2, 4th round 3, 6th overall.

PEAK DOWNS PONY CLUB NEWS

Finally we managed to get a rally day in at Peak Downs after the last two having to be cancelled due to weather.  A great day was enjoyed by all with the kids enjoying a range of activities from troop drill to learning how to ride a rider class/hack class in preparation for the show and gymkhana events that they all love and eagerly participated in.

We were also lucky enough to have the honour of Barb Challacombe coming along to instruct on how to do a dry pattern for a stockman's challenge.  This was enjoyed by all and we all hope that we are fortunate enough to be able to get Barb to come back and share some more of her knowledge with us.

We finished the day off with a trail ride and are all keen to get back into it again now that the rain seems to have let up for the time being.
